SWAPPING CLOTHING - EASY ON THE PLANET, EASY ON YOUR WALLET

Swapping clothes has been around forever. Graduating from simple one-on-one transactions (Hey, Gal Pal, would you like my blue sweater?  I'm kind of over it..) to semi-organized clothing swaps.   Now Swap Society takes clothing swapping and up-cycling to a whole new level.  It serves as a virtual clothing swap for women and kids that gives you equal value for your clothes. SwapSociety members refresh their wardrobes without the guilt that fast fashion perpetuates, with the added reward of saving money by not buying new.

Autumn garden plants & advice

The UC Cooperative Extension/LA County Master Gardeners will be at the Green Tent at their usual spot this coming Sunday, October 28.

Nature is starting to rebel.  Rats decimated many of the seedlings that our intrepid Master Gardeners had lovingly grown.   A new assortment is being gathered and all will be revealed this Sunday.  

• Earn some good karma by bringing your old six-pack trays so we can continue to grow seedlings for your gardening pleasure.  THANKS!

Autumn garden plants & advice

The UC Cooperative Extension/LA County Master Gardeners will be at the Green Tent at their usual spot this coming Sunday, September 23rd.  

Baby Kale

This week they'll have some seasonal seed packets, information on what to do in garden in the autumn, and the following plants to give away:

• 
  

• Baby kale. It's an heirloom variety that will mature into little plants which are the  Master Gardeners think are best harvested young like lettuces.

• A few spinach, lettuce and rainbow chard.

Sugar Snap Peas

• Sugar snap peas -- delicious, eat them, pods and all.

• Cilantro/Coriander plants. Lucky you!  We have a slow-bolting variety and grows well in good containers. Use the fresh leaves for their intense tangy flavor.  Allow some plants to mature and save the Coriander seed.  Can be grown inside in a bright sunny window.

You may have heard about the 600+ acres of the Ballona Wetlands just to the south and west of Mar Vista. But have you visited this wild habitat where coyote and the beautiful and rare White Tailed Kite hunt?

Drop by the Green Tent on Sunday, September 16, to learn about this fragile mosaic of different habitats: seasonal ponds, wet meadows, salt pannes, sand dunes and prairie grassland.

Biologist Roy Van de Hoek (perhaps you know him from the Feathers & Foliage walks in Mar Vista or have seen his Blue Bird houses in our trees) and Marcia Hanscom, Executive Director of the Ballona Institute will be on hand to talk with you. Ballona Institute is known as "The Voice for nature on the Los Angeles Coast."

ART WALK is coming!!!

Get a preview of the upcoming Mar Vista Art Walk at the Green Tent!

Created as a means of improving the walkability of our neighborhood, The Mar Vista Art Walk is a fun, FREE celebration of all the arts.  More walking = fewer cars + less greenhouse gas + better health! 

Designated one of Mayor Garcetti’s “Great Streets”, the 1-mile stretch of Venice Blvd between Inglewood Blvd – Beethoven St. will be transformed by its current theme, SCIENCE.

This ART WALK explores the nexus between science and art.  Come check out cool, new tech, digital art, Ai, wearable and your favorite techno beats.

The September 6 Mar Vista Art Walk is  on its regular Thursday night schedule -- opening at 6 p.m. and closing at 10 p.m. Special activities for families with pre-school aged children start at New School West/ and A Kid's Place preschools at 4:30 p.m. There will stil be plenty of daylight hours - sunset's just after 7 p.m.- and great weather, so keep that in mind as you plan your activities. 

The final 2018 Mar Vista Art Walk is Saturday, November 24, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. (all day event for Small Business Saturday. Theme: INNER GIVING.

The Mar Vista Art Walk is a joint effort of environmental nonprofit Green Communications Initiative (GCI) and the community of local artists, with the enthusiastic support of CD-11 councilmember Mike Bonin, the Mar Vista Neighborhood Council, Mayor Eric Garcetti’s “Great Streets” Initiative, the Department of Cultural Affairs, Michelle Pine Rappoport-KW Realty, KW Realty-Silicon Beach, RSI, Earthstar Creation Center and the M & R Vest Foundation.  The ART WALK this time welcomes new sponsors Getaround, JC Decaux, MedMen and the Mar Vista Chamber of Commerce!
