Master Gardeners August 26, 2018

Are you ready to start your Fall garden? Come to the Green Tent on Sunday, August 26th as the UC/CE LA County Master Gardeners  return for their monthly visit.

They’re bringing herbs, flowers, veggies and fruit to give away (and of course, free seed packets too!):

Autumn Beauty Mixed Color Sunflowers...Irresistible!!!

Heirloom Tuscan Baby Leaf KALE! (does best in fall and winter so plant it up now!)

Scented BASIL trio

Icebox Rainbow Sherbet WATERMELON

Container CUCUMBER

Astia container ZUCCHINI (they’re very small and very easy to harvest!)

Heirloom pole GREEN BEANS — these are the kind that need support from a trellis or stakes

It goes without saying that water is an issue, as the drought and heat continue. It’s ALWAYS best to water your garden early in the morning. If you wait till evening, you’ll risk encouraging powdery mildew and other fungal diseases. And please, water the SOIL not the plants (although if you have a “mist” setting, it’s also a good idea to do a quick spray of the leaves to keep them cool and breathing as the heat goes up)

AND!  The return of the MG’s VICTORY GARDEN classes — low priced four week series for beginners—is here at last! Here’s the schedule, you can mix and match.

As ever, please bring your plastic six packs to be re-used by the MGs, who’ll be planting up more seedlings to give away next month!

Food Forward August 12, 2018

SHARING ABUNDANCE WITH THOSE IN NEED

Learn how you can help provide fresh fruits and veggies to the hungry in your community! Food Forward is a Southern California based non-profit that recovers produce from backyard fruit trees, farmers markets and LA's downtown wholesale market and then donates 100% of what is collected to local hunger relief agencies.

Food Forward not only battles hunger in Southern California but also works to curb the environmental issue of food waste. Recent studies have shown that 40% of the food in the country never makes it to the table and 20% of what goes into municipal landfills is food. Southern California is an abundant land of agriculture and donating surplus food to the 1.28 million food insecure in LA county is a win-win!

Since forming in 2009, Food Forward has collected over 40 million pounds of produce, which has helped to feed 150,000 clients a month through more than 300 diverse distribution partners across Southern California.

Sign up to volunteer at https://foodforward.org/volunteer/sign-up-to-volunteer/.

Food Forward hosts 150+ volunteer-powered events per month so, whether you'd like to pick fruit or go to the farmers market with us, there are many opportunities to contribute to our efforts in providing nourishing fruits and veggies food to those most in need.

August 5 - Pachamama Alliance

YES, WE CAN REVERSE GLOBAL WARMING!!!

Celebrate the 12th anniversary of the Mar Vista Farmer's Market this Sunday, August 5, at the Green Tent with Pachamama Alliance!

We know you want to be part of the solution for saving Planet Earth, so which steps are the most effective in actually removing carbon from the atmosphere?

Pachamama Alliance in conjunction with Project Drawdown will help you discover which of the top 100 solutions you are already implementing.  Create your own refrigerator magnet to keep you focused on solutions instead of problems.

Through the Awakening the Dreamer symposium and Project Drawdown workshops, the Pachamama Alliance engages and educates about climate change, how to reverse global warming, and bring forth an environmentally sustainable, socially just, and spiritually fulfilling human presence on this planet.

Learn what YOU can do to help reverse global warming, and how shopping at the farmer's market is already a big step towards creating sustainable, resilient communities!
